THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Friends of Arya, the schoolgirl who was raped and murdered in March last year, will request President Pranab Mukerjee to expedite the process of executing convict Rajesh Kumar. The 1,054 students of the Govt Girls Higher Secondary School, Kanyakulangara, have decided to send postcards requesting the President, the Chief Justices of the Supreme Court and the high court to expedite the process.

This was decided at the special assembly held in the school on Friday, a day after principal sessions court awarded capital punishment to Rajesh. The brief letter to be enclosed with the postcards will state why they want the culprit to be hanged.

The school will felicitate all policemen who played a role in bringing the accused to court. "A function has been arranged on January 10 to felicitate the policemen and the public prosecutor who worked to ensure justice to Arya. Home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will attend the function," said G G Jayakumari, headmistress.

PTA president Anil Kumar said everybody wants speedy justice for rape victims, especially after the recent Delhi incident. "Kerala has become a model by pronouncing the verdict in this case in less than a year since the crime. There must not be any delay in executing the verdict.

The students want the President, the CJI and the Chief Justice of high court, who will decide on the appeal of the convict, to not delay justice," he said.

Justice is so flawed in our country that now young girls, as young as below 18, have to request the President not to delay the process," Kumar said.

Arya, a 10th standard student of GGHSS, was raped and murdered in March 6, last year. The tragedy has struck Arya's classmates so hard that they were given psychological counselling prior to the SSLC examination.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: This was expected, said G G Jayakumari, headmistress of Govt Girls' Higher Secondary School, Kanyakulangara, soon after the Thiruvananthapuram principal sessions court awarded death sentence to Rajesh Kumar for the rape and murder of Arya VJ.
Arya, who was extremely good at studies, was preparing for her SSLC examination when she was killed in March last year.
The rape and murder of the 15-year-old had shocked her classmates so much that the school authorities had to arrange counselling for the entire 166 students who appeared for the SSLC exam last year. Arya was murdered on March 6, six days ahead of the SSLC exam.
"She was one of our brightest students. We had expected her to get A plus for all subjects. The tragedy struck her classmates so hard that it affected the SSLC results last year. Though we had counseled our students before the exams, most students could not perform as expected," Jayakumari said. "We took special care of Arya's close friends who had suffered acute mental shock," she added.
Arya's teachers and friends were awaiting the verdict since morning. However, the verdict came only by evening. "We will convene a special assembly on Friday and will inform our students about the verdict. We are planning to arrange a meeting to felicitate those who worked to get the culprit behind bars. We will also arrange a rally in memory of Arya. The programmes will be finalized at the PTA meeting," she said.
