Thiruvananthapuram: A rivulet at Keezhe Kallayam near Karakulam is in full flow, not a monsoon phenomenon but, due to a leakage in the Kerala Water Authority’s (KWA) distribution pipe. The water treated from Kummi treatment plant is being wasted, thanks to the negligence of KWA. The entire water pumped from the treatment plant in Kummi will get drained from the 2 lakh litre tank within an hour, sources said.
The tank was commissioned around 30 years ago to supply water to the drought-hit Karakulam panchayat. Leakage was reported from the tank in the past three years.
After repeated complaints, KWA officials cemented the walls originally made of stone two months ago. But that could not stem the profuse leakage. The leak is not visible from outside and the officials suspect that the base of the ground-level tank is leaking.
Though lakhs of litres of water are getting wasted every day, the KWA has done nothing to stop pumping. Local people said that they get water from pipes laid for the Japan International Corporation Agency-assisted water supply project.
When contacted, KWA superintending engineer K Sasi said that a solution for the leak will be made in two months. “We have decided to strengthen the tank. The Rs 6-lakh project to cement the base of the tank will be completed in two months,” he said. The KWA, however, is yet to float tender for the project. The department is also doing nothing to stop pumping. The KWA officials said that the leakage was not serious enough to stop pumping.
“We are still distributing water from the pump. The leakage is not as serious as the local people claim,” an assistant engineer in charge of the scheme said.
