New drain at Thampanoor to fight waterlogging

Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) will begin construction of a storm water drain at Thampanoor, infamous for flash floods, on Saturday. Based on the proposal of Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP), the drain will be constructed in bigger size than those developed under City roads improvement project (Crip).

Ironically, the construction will begin at a time when the state is gearing up to welcome south west monsoon. The KSUDP had submitted a proposal to Kerala Road Fund Board a month ago. TRDCL revised the proposal, which was accepted by KSUDP last week. “The original design submitted by KSUDP proposed a drain three times higher than the required capacity. So we revised the design, which got approval last week. We will begin work on Saturday,” said TRDL vice-president Anil Kumar Pandala.

The TRDCL is awaiting the approval of the railways for the construction of drain near its premises. “We didn’t get the approval. However, we are proceeding with the work,” he said.

The normal size of prefabricated drain in Crip roads is 65 cm x 65cm. As the area is prone to flash floods, the new design will have drain blocks of the size 2m x 1m. Though several projects like increasing the height of the road had been initiated in the area to put an end to the flash flood phenomenon, the issue couldn’t be solved.

The work would not be an easy task for TRDCL. Due to encroachment of KSTRC bus stand, a major portion of drain has to be constructed under the road. Also, sewage of most of the commercial institutions and residences in the area are opened directly into the drain, which is one of the reasons for water logging at the area. “We have forwarded a complaint to the city corporation requesting them to take action against those who direct sewage water to the drain. However, the corporation has not taken any action,” Pandala said.

Meanwhile, Thampanoor has been facing water logging for the past three days. Diversion of drainage water due to the construction of drainage by KSUDP in front of New theatre is reportedly the reason for the unexpected water logging. However, KSUDP officials denied it. “We are constructing drain at the area to connect it with the drain in Ponnara park. As far as I know, it is not causing any water logging at the area,” said a KSUDP official.

Cleaning of Pazhavangadi canal, another project of KSUDP, too is yet to complete. It is certain that city, at least Thampanoor area, will have a bad time this monsoon.
